Hollow Bodies
(Fearless)

Phoenix’s Blessthefall have been slowly yet steadily establishing a name for themselves within the underground metalcore scene, co-headlining several tours including the annual Warped Tour this past summer. Yet their latest effort doesn’t really strike as anything much more than a bit predictable. The guitar work between Eric Lambert and Elliot Gruenberg is still rather impressive, but at times the switch from screaming to clean vocals comes off slightly awkward. Not to say the album doesn’t have it’s moments; “Carry On” is a decent enough heavy number that features an intense duet with August Burns Red singer Jake Luhrs, while the closing track (“Open Water”) is a touching moment between singer Beau Bokan and his wife, singer Lights. But overall, the album just doesn’t pack enough punch to standout among a sea of so many bands with such similar sounds. (Jesse Striewski)

Tonight Alive
The Other Side
(Fearless)

Radio friendly pop-rock with well done female vocals, endless melodies and driving percussion, if these Australians are looking to be in the running for the next household name they sure seem on their way. While the music is generally upbeat and highly energetic, the lyrical themes surround heartbreak, alienation and the usual young 20s dilemmas. While this isn’t exactly striking any new ground, Tonight Alive covers familiar territory much better than their counterparts. (Tom Haugen)

Mayday Parade
Monsters In The Closet
(Fearless Records)

Mayday Parade have never been better than they were during Anywhere But Here, and since that album, they’ve gradually become less memorable, as made perfectly clear with Monsters In The Closet. That isn’t to say the band’s latest release is a waste of time – because it’s a solid outing that provides a fair share of yuks for fans – but it comes and go without leaving much of a lasting impression. The songs are just more of the same, which is probably the biggest problem. The band hasn’t evolved in the least bit over the years, and their energetic hooks have become weaker and less convincing. There are only a few tracks during Monsters that come close to being truly catchy, which is a little pathetic considering the band’s past. Hell, one of the best tracks, “The Torment of Existing Weighed Against the Horror of Nonbeing”, is enjoyable, but also feels much too familiar (almost like a Plain White T’s knock-off), and therefore loses points. Monsters In The Closet just doesn’t feel original at all. It exists, and plays smoothly from start to finish, but offers very few thrills. Mayday Parade are losing their touch, it seems. I suppose I’ll just have to keep playing Anywhere But Here when I’m feeling nostalgic. (Nathaniel Lay)

Get Scared
Everyone’s Out to Get Me
(Fearless Records)

Whenever a band switches vocalists I always get extremely nervous. Nowadays, it means the band is going to change dramatically and a lot of internet drama will ensue, but every now and then the new vocalist is given the boot in favor of the original. This was the case for Utah-based, emo-rock group Get Scared on their latest release Everyone’s Out to Get Me. The return of Nick Matthews and his experiences apart from the band he helped found basically becomes the underlying theme of every song on Get Scared’s newest LP. The band may try to fool you with songs about relationships and break-ups, but when the opening lines for the entire album are “It’s the thing you least expected/when I got back up” off of a track titled “I Told Ya So,” it becomes clear that the main focus of this album was the re-invention of their vocalist, and in turn, the band itself.

Everyone’s Out to Get Me is a vaudevillian, whimsical rock record that not only shows a new maturity within the band, but sonically returns to their roots emulating a Get Scared reminiscent of their underground days. Goth-pop tracks like “My Nightmare,” aside from the higher quality production, could easily have been included on Get Scared’s first EP, 2009′s Cheap Tricks and Theatrics. While “For You” is a super up-beat, pop-punk-circa-2003 sounding track that surprisingly is a great transition from the doom and gloom lyrics the band typically caters to. This is especially evident with the line “I just may be the type of personality that compliments your style,” being the most positive thing uttered on this album.

Get Scared wrote Everyone’s Out to Get Me in a very scattered fashion so that it feels somewhat stitched together as a whole. It’s filled with songs and narratives that are meant to stand on their own, but cite each other subtly. “God Damn Liar” continuously refers to the singer being “at my best,” though the track comes several songs after the single “At My Worst,” which leads me to believe the former inspired the latter. This occurs within several other tracks, almost as if Get Scared left Easter eggs for their fans to find. And as strange and out of place as it is, it forces the listener to start piecing all of the lyrics in every song together.

Clearly, not every track on this album is a break-through for the band. Several numbers like “Us in Motion” do feel like Jimmy Eat World or All Time Low rip offs, and I’m pretty sure they used a drum machine on a couple tracks, like in the opening of “God Damn Liar.” But what blew me out of the water was “Stumbling in Your Footsteps.” Not only does it have a great title, but this rock-ballad really gives off the emotion of the band as a whole. From the power in Matthews’ voice to the strain in the backing vocals to the overall aggression in the instrumentals, they really make you believe the words within the lines. It’s a monumental step up from anything that came off of 2011′s Best Kind of Mess and proves that bringing Nick Matthews back was an extremely important move.

Punk Goes Christmas
(Fearless Records)

I feel like everyone and their brother wants a girlfriend for Christmas. As time has gone on, Christmas seems to have more heartbreak and sad-single-saps than Valentine’s Day. It’s as if Nicholas Sparks took over the entire month of December. The latest release in Fearless Records’ Punk Goes… series, Punk Goes Christmas, is no exception. Though it’s filled with a nice mix of holiday originals and cover songs, overall I just felt like everyone broke out some serious comfort food and sweatpants when recording these tracks.

All Time Low and Crown the Empire both came up with some solid original “I’m Alone On Christmas” songs for this record. ATL’s “Fool’s Holiday” is a great blues meets pop punk track that uses jingle-bells to actually add a little joy to the bowl of Ben and Jerrys Alex Gaskarth probably devoured when he wrote this. However, it’s a nice break from the amped-up party-rock songs I am used to hearing from ATL. The same can be said of CTE’s really heart-felt break up song “There Will Be No Christmas.” All of the harsh unclean vocals have been removed to make room for a really nice duet between vocalists Andy Leo and David Escamilla. The song also works in this really interesting orchestra-for-interpretive-dance melody throughout it. I mean it’s such a big, powerful, and pretty song that I kept waiting for Celine Dion to jump in.

Usually with Punk Goes… records, all of the songs are covers, but for this release, the majority of the bands chose to write their own pieces. The Ready Set’s “I Don’t Wanna Spend Another Christmas Without You” and Yellowcard’s “Christmas Lights,” both relationship-oriented, are really enjoyable in a coffee house singer/songwriter kind of way. They completely make up for train wreck tracks like “Father Christmas” by Man Overboard, which is way too nasally and whiney to stomach. The chorus constantly repeats “Father Christmas give me some money” in a failed attempt to criticize the consumerism of the holiday season. It really upsets the overall vibe of the rest of the record, as well. Oh, and at one point vocalist Zac Eisenstein asks Santa for a machine gun to “scare all the pricks on my street.” Okay Grinch. Get back in your sleigh.

Oddly, the strongest tracks are actually covers. The Summer Set’s cover of “This Christmas” is such a great transition from the original. They mix horns with catchy pop beats and find a way to successfully incorporate “nananas” and “shake your hips” into the chorus. And of course, I cannot forget Issues’ cover of “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.” There are no adequate words for my excitement as a child for the original ‘N Sync Christmas album, so I was ecstatic to see how well Issues combined the boy band groove with breakdowns, unclean vocals, and the occasional djent undertones on this cover. It is pure post-hardcore gold with the holiday cheer I have been waiting for throughout the whole album. (Natasha Van Duser)
