Ice Nine Kills Release “Communion Of The Cursed” Music Video, Launch Album Pre-Orders

Boston, MA’s Ice Nine Kills has set out to shock fans with the release of the music video for new single “Communion Of The Cursed”. Inspired by the terrifying story of William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist, Ice Nine Kills spared no detail in re-creating the theatrical thriller with their own metal flare. The single comes ahead of the December 4th release of Every Trick In The Book, now available for pre-order with exclusive bundle options at IceNineKills.com. Fans who pre-order the album will receive an instant download of tracks “Communion Of The Cursed”, “Bloodbath & Beyond”, and “Me Myself & Hyde”.

“William Peter Blatty’s 1971 classic novel, The Exorcist, tells the horrifying story of the possession of a 12 year old girl by the devil himself. It’s adaptation to the big screen in 1973 terrified audiences all over the world and is widely considered to be the scariest film of all time. We wanted our song and video for “Communion Of The Cursed” to pay a respectful homage to this brilliantly twisted story and to hopefully help expose people to this literary gem which has stood the test of time. We set out to make this video really feel like a horror film by adding an opening and closing that stands alone from the song. The actors and directors involved in the project brought my vision to life in the most elegant way possible. I couldn’t be more thrilled for people to experience this next chapter.”

Ice Nine Kills will kick off their U.S. tour, headlining the Fearless Records presents “Fresh Faces Tour” with support from labelmates Wage War, My Enemies & I, and The White Noise. The North American run will kick off this Friday, October 24th in Rochester, NY at Water Street Music Hall. Tickets are available at FreshFacesTour.com with exclusive VIP ticketing bundle options. Scroll down for full tour routing.

Inspired by iconic stories throughout literature, Every Trick In The Book is much more than a typical 10-track collection. Ice Nine Kills seamlessly weaves aggressive post hardcore with soaring theatrical melodies, utilizing multi-textured guitar hooks, a dual vocal attack, complex orchestral arrangements and a pummeling rhythm section. With their unmatched songwriting reputation and love for story-telling, the band reflects on the dark side of such classic stories as Dracula, Romeo & Juliet, Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Animal Farm, and more, creating vibrant narratives mixed with the band’s trademark sound.

Album Review: Get Scared –‘Demons’

Get Scared
Demons
(Fearless Records)

“Cut you open and make you sick/suffer, suffer, suffer like I did” are probably not the lyrics you’d expect to grace a chorus as catchy as the one on Get Scared’s single “Suffer,” however, their third full-length release, Demons, is simply brewing with lines just as angry, disturbing and macabre. But don’t look at that as a bad thing. With a stunning vocal range, top-notch song structures, and just a brooding overall vibe, Demons is not only the best record Get Scared has released to date, but also the most sophisticated and polished.

Get Scared has always been one of those bands that deserved way more credit than they were given. With a throwback vibe to the early days of My Chemical Romance and The Used, Get Scared also derives a great deal of influence from heavier genres to help round out their sound overall. Tracks like “Relax, Relapse” display a very contained sense of anger playing on the emotion reflected through the lyrics as well as musically. Catchy choruses, forceful verses and mini breakdowns run rampant throughout this record.

The levels of intensity reflected in Demons dance on a fine line between post-hardcore and marketable pop. “Buried Alive” will be stuck in your head all day as Nick Matthews’ voice carries the song with a steady balance of pop-punk melodic vocals and guttural screams. You’re guaranteed to be surprised by how deep some of his uncleans can go in contrast to how light and soothing some of his more tame choruses come across.

When it comes to Demons, “What If I’m Right” and the title track are what really make this record shine. While the more isolated vocals of “What If I’m Right” make lines like “the pills offset each other/so I’m not making sense” resonate much more than the most of the musically backed lyrics, the combined drum and vocal build-up into the bridge of “Demons” marks one of the most standout moments on the entire album. In both cases, Get Scared easily prove that sometimes less really is more.

Like all records, Demons does have moments that are far weaker than others. “Take A Bow” and “Second Guessing” are tracks that don’t fully stick in the listener’s mind once the album has played through and feel more like filler songs, especially in comparison to the record’s anchor track “R.I.P.” Opening the song with gritty, hardcore punk vocals, Matthews’ more melodic notes weave throughout the uncleans in a strange, almost R&B-like style before leading up to the dark lines “I can’t buy into just a prophet dressed like a poet/and if you talk to God I’m sure that he’ll tell you he knows” which help bring the record to a rather theatrical close.

Get Scared has always been phenomenal with bringing an Edgar Allan Poe vibe into a musical structure without ever feeling campy, and Demons is no exception. With a high level of lyrical sophistication and a great insight to a chaotic, yet graspable instrumental layout, Get Scared found a way to translate raw emotion into a very engaging, entertaining, and eerie record. Brighton, UK’s As It Is have released the music video for “Speak Soft.” The track is taken from their album Never Happy, Ever After, available now on iTunes.

Filmed across two continents, with two videographers, the video showcases the band’s kinetic live energy while rocking out on the beaches of Australia to coincide with the video narrative, which was shot in the UK. The shoot provided quite a challenge for As It Is, explains lead vocalist Patty Walters, “whilst in Australia, we had to find a suitable location to film in the dark that would suit the narrative and where no one would hear us. We got up at 3am to film the performance on a beach in Newcastle during sunrise after only a couple of hours sleep. We carried all of the gear a mile down a small patch to the beach, in the hope no one was there.” Watch the video for “Speak Soft” on AsItIsOfficial.com

The pop-punk five-piece is currently on a U.S. tour as support to Mayday Parade on the Hot Topic presents AP Tour, alongside Real Friends and This Wild Life. Show Review: August Burns Red, Every Time I Die, Stick To Your Guns, Polyphia, and Wage War at the Worcester Palladium

Words & Photos by Nathan Katsiaficas

Boasting what is probably the most diverse lineup of any “heavy” music tour so far this season, Lancaster, PA metalcore innovators August Burns Red are currently in the midst of a headlining run through the US and Canada with direct support from Buffalo’s finest, Every Time I Die, and additional supporting acts Stick To Your Guns, Polyphia, and Wage War.  As one of a select few metalcore acts pushing the boundaries of an otherwise stale subgenre, this lineup makes a lot of sense for August Burns Red–and honestly, it’s really refreshing to see a package that features such a mix of different flavors of metal and hardcore and includes both well-established and up and coming bands. I caught up with the tour on its second date, as it made its way to the Palladium in Worcester, MA on November 28th.

Fans turned out in large numbers on this cold Saturday evening and had packed the first floor of the Palladium to the gills by the time opener Wage War emerged onto the stage. Hailing from Ocala,FL–the same town that produced pop-punk/metalcore staple A Day To Remember–these gentlemen are relatively new to the national touring circuit, though you wouldn’t have known it from their stage presence or the tight set they put on, which featured some of the bounciest metalcore I’ve heard in quite some time. Wage War recently made their full length debut with Blueprints on Fearless Records, and while they may not be a household name just yet, this tour should help them gain some momentum, especially if they keep performing at this high a level each night.

Instrumental act Polyphia emerged to melt the faces of those in attendance. Many in the crowd (myself included) stood mouth agape at the level of musician ship displayed by these four gentlemen all of whom, as many of the later acts pointed out, are in their late teens or at most earliest twenties. The band was just recently signed to Equal Vision Records and self-released their first full length Muse earlier this year. Definitely an act worth arriving early for if Wage War alone wasn’t enticing enough to you.

Orange County hardcore act Stick To Your Guns were up next with a set that really set things off with the crowd, spawning numerous circle pits and waves of crowd surfers. Here, just a stone’s throw from the legendary Boston hardcore scene, it almost felt like watching a band play a hometown show as they blasted through fan-favorites like “Amber” and “What Goes Around,” and newer hits like “Nobody” and “What Choice Did You Give Us?”  Frontman Jesse Barnett and his bandmates executed their supporting role flawlessly as they led the audience through an 8-song, high-energy workout that left the crowd sweaty and eager for more.

After a brief stage changeover, the lights dimmed and Every Time I Die frontman Keith Buckley emerged center-stage to deliver the opening verse to “Moor” off the band’s most recent release From Parts Unknown. All hell seemed to break loose in the crowd about a minute and a half into the song as things took a turn for the heavy. The band continued their onslaught with “Floater, “Typical Miracle,”  “Thirst,” “Decayin’ With the Boys,” and fan-favorite “Ebolarama.” To say their set was intense would be an understatement–Every Time I Die have few equals when it comes to their on-stage energy. Brothers Keith and Jordan Buckley and their bandmates were in their usual form, thrashing about on stage and leaping from risers as they blasted through a sizable 14-song set. The band closed things out with “Underwater Bimbos from Outer Space” and “Bored Stiff.”

Every Time I Die is not an easy act to follow, but August Burns Red was more than up for the challenge, armed with a set that had a nice selection of material both old and new. They kicked things off with new track “Martyr” off their June release Found In Far Away Places, before continuing with “Provisions” from 2013’s Rescue & Restore, and fan-favorites “Back Burner” from 2007’s Messengers and “Meddler” off of 2009’s Constellations. Frontman Jake Luhrs was flawless in his delivery as he strutted about the stage from riser to riser, flexing his biceps and swinging his microphone around.  August Burns Red is one of those bands that is just incapable of putting on a bad performance–this was probably the 8th or 9th time I’ve seen these guys live and no matter the setting, I’ve yet to be disappointed. Their 14-song set included other hits and favorites including “White Washed,” “Majoring in the Minors,” and “Composure,” as well as a seasonally appropriate cover, “Carol of the Bells.”  The band returned for a 2-song encore which featured a cover of “Frosty the Snowman,” followed by “Faultlines” from their 2013 release.  The tour continues on through December 20th (see remaining dates after the photos below) and is definitely worth seeing if you can make it out to a date!

In addition to a new album next year, the band plans on embarking on a headlining North American tour in support of the release. In the early hours of the morning, The Word Alive‘s new single off their upcoming album hit the airwaves. The song, titled “Trapped,” is the first single off their fourth studio album, Dark Matter. The album was announced a few weeks ago, and is expected to hit stores March 18 via Fearless Records. You can listen to the new single below.

I have been listening to The Word Alive since Craig Mabbitt was in the band. They have grown substantially as a band over the years, and judging by this first single, they still have plenty of creativity to work with. Luckily fans won’t have to wait too long to find out what the band has to offer on their latest effort.

Pre-order Dark Matter through iTunes and receive an instant download of “Trapped.” Physical pre-order bundles are available for purchase through MerchNow. International pre-orders are expected to become available January 22.

Album Review: Ice Nine Kills –‘Every Trick In The Book’

Ice Nine Kills
Every Trick In The Book
(Fearless Records)

There’s a reason that Metallica: The Musical hasn’t been a thing. Translating heavy music into a stage production is just setting yourself up for failure. Sure, metal and hard rock can be theatrical in nature. Those genres are great outlets for overarching themes, in-depth concepts, and winding stories, as long as they stay in the metal and rock realms. When it comes to Ice Nine Kills’ latest record, Every Trick In The Book, the listener will easily understand why writing a metalcore album that reflects the sounds of an off-Broadway indie performance piece is just bizarre and over the top.

Every Trick In The Book is a cool concept in theory. Vocalist Spencer Charnas is a huge lit nerd who wanted to translate his love of books and the theater into his love of music. I mean, even the name of the band is a Kurt Vonnegut reference. However, by basing all ten tracks of the album off of a famous work in literature, Charnas has instead created miniature summaries of already widely-known stories and plopped some djent behind them.

Ice Nine Kills’ previous release The Predator Becomes The Prey was an album that displayed key lyrical content, sophisticated genre-mashing, and fun instrumentals. It flowed as one work even though it lacked a direct concept. When you listen to the tracks that make up Every Trick In The Book, you are immediately drawn away from the album itself simply due to a basic familiarity with the themes of each track. For example, opening with “The Nature of the Beast” which is based off of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, lyrics like “We’re fucking animals” lose any sense of metaphorical content because if you’ve read Animal Farm you know that, yes, Napoleon the Pig is in fact an animal. This again reflects poorly on more well-constructed lines like “We are the beaten and the scorned/and now you’ve forced the beast to bear its teeth,” because, again, yes, farm animals are dominated by humanity and lash out in this incredibly successful novel that just about everyone passed their sophomore year of high school has read.

Themes like this continue throughout the entirety of this album as readers are constantly drawn away from the album itself to focus more on how each track regurgitates a work written by someone else. “You know what, baby? Your neck is next” (“Bloodbath & Beyond” inspired by Dracula), “The girl that was lost/the girl no one saved/with blood on her face” (“Hell in The Hallways” inspired by Carrie) and even “So where’s your savior tonight?” (“Communion of the Cursed” inspired by The Exorcist) all feel like interesting lines until you realize they are rehashing key moments from another person’s story. The whole nature of originality is lost in this album due to story content and a general familiarity with the influencing texts.

Lyrically and thematically aside, this record is proof that sometimes an idea really can bite off more than one can chew. There’s a strange disconnect between metalcore and theatrical vaudeville in this album. You can audibly hear how every track was laid out for a Broadway production score through the ballad-like nature of “Tess-Timony” to the pop-oriented chorus in “The Plot Sickens” all the way to the spotlight moments in “The People in the Attic” sampling part of Anne Frank’s diary for dramatic as well as historical effect. Hell, even tracks like “Star-Crossed Enemies” feel like filler to transition from one act of the record to the next. It’s all very clunky and formulaic, therefore losing the listener and coming off as forcing two musical genres to meld when they just don’t quite fit together.

I’m a big fan of Ice Nine Kills and I do love that they tried something different, but they seemed to have hidden themselves in their attempt to take on such a grand scale project with so many well known characteristics attached to it. Vocally and technically, the band is on par with where they should be. Charnas’ range in “Tess-Timony” reaches new heights for him and the displacing duality of the instrumentals in “Me, Myself & Hyde” is so fun and necessary to the topic of the track itself that it actually tells the story of Jekyll and Hyde simply through the guitar and drum work.

Ice Nine Kills has some really killer ideas and a cool outlook on where they can take their genre of music. And while this album may have missed the mark, a refined ear and a little more toning down of such grand ideas and concepts could really help develop a new style and sound for both the band and their genre as they grow into their next release. Hopefully, next time, Ice Nine Kills won’t try to pull out every trick in the book to make a record. (Natasha Van Duser)

Album Review: The White Noise –‘Aren’t You Glad?’ EP

The White Noise
Aren’t You Glad? EP
(Fearless Records)

The first time I heard the single “Bloom” by LA-based newcomers The White Noise, I found myself hitting the repeat button a dozen times and struggling to figure out where I could get my hands on more music by this band. There was something raw, inventive, and oddly nostalgic about the sound coming from my speakers. It was like I was finally hearing that sound which brought together all my favorite musical genres into one. However, at that time “Bloom” was the only track available. So you can imagine my excitement when I finally got my hands on their debut EP Aren’t You Glad?

Aren’t You Glad? is hardcore, metalcore, pop punk, traditional punk, commercial rock and grunge kind of all rolled into one. Each of the six tracks add a unique edge to the overall sound of the EP without stepping on the toes of the band’s sound as a whole. But most notably, this EP feels more like you’re actually attending a show rather than listening to a digitally mastered recording. From the pure energy released in the vocals, riffs and drum fills, the EP exudes a “Fuck it, man. Let’s just do it” feel all around.

“Red Eye Lids” is perhaps the best example of this live show vibe. From opening the track with a false start and the self critical “Hold on that was shit, let’s do that again,” the rest of the lyrical content takes the listener straight to the venue with lines like “I’ll save a seat for you.” and “Shut up. Jump.” (though it’s easily misheard comically as “Shut up, Chuck!”). For the fans of heavier music, this track is also the most metalcore influenced on the album with its heavier riffs and deeper vocals. Think “circle pit” when you jam to it.

On the flip side, though, the listener gets more radio-friendly tracks like “Brainwashed.” Carried by an underlying groove metal riff, the track leans far more in a pop punk direction with an almost exclusive set of clean vocals to accompany it. The mash up of the jagged notes in Shawn Walker’s voice work extremely well to compliment the soothing, toned back melodies that stem from David Southern. And while this track is the most marketable to the general public, it is ironically the weakest on Aren’t You Glad? as it does not hit nearly as many out of the box notes as the rest of the EP does.

We see this diverse nature thoroughly in “Picture Day,” the strongest track on the EP. It’s scratchy, gnarly basement punk mixed with catchy hooks, a straight up pop-influenced bridge, and cliché lyrics that lose their sense of camp in large part because of the tone they are delivered in. “I set myself on fire now when I think of you” just sounds beautifully bitter rather than overdone as it smoothly cuts through the harsher vocals of the track almost as if the band is saying “We can make a song sound however the hell we want; we need no formula to do it.”

It’s rare to come across a band whose recordings are so jumbled and all over the place, but still capable of sounding like one collective body of work. If you’re looking for a solid, concretely defined genre, you will not find this with The White Noise. Aren’t You Glad? is an EP filled with sounds reminiscent of that classic ’70s punk attitude and early 2000s MySpace flavor while still feeling like a new form of contemporary rock. With such a sophisticated grasp on various alternative genres, it’s hard to believe these six tracks are just their debut. (Natasha Van Duser)

Album Review: The Word Alive –‘Dark Matter’

The Word Alive
Dark Matter
(Fearless Records)

As an established musician, changing your sound can either kill or catapult your career. Bring Me The Horizon are a prime example of a band who have thrived despite a dramatic shift in their sound since their debut album. There are certainly vocal fans out there who complain about the change, but overall, it seems quite apparent that they would not be nearly as popular as they are currently if they stuck with deathcore. Another example of how change can be the best course of action is The Word Alive. None of their albums are exactly the same, which can be attributed to their commitment to creating a unique listening experience with each release.

Many fans are wondering if Dark Matter will continue on the same path as Real. took back in 2014. It does…and it doesn’t. Frontman Telle Smith experimented with some high pitched screams in Real. – which is not something he had done previously. He does not incorporate those screams in any of the tracks on Dark Matter. In fact, all of the tracks mostly contain clean vocals. This is a direction TWA have been heading in for some time now, so that isn’t a surprise. Don’t let that fact worry you though – the band hasn’t forgotten how to write a hit. There are a few songs that will get fans amped – like “Trapped” and “Dark Matter.”

“Suffocating” is one of my personal favorite tracks on the album. Its intro is also oddly familiar – the guitars remind me of the intro to Bring Me The Horizon’s “Sleepwalking.” “Insane” is another top-notch track on the album. It’s an anthemic song that any fan who has ever felt like an outcast can get down to. Telle is not known to shy away from writing songs that bring people together, and there are a few tracks that underline that fact. Another anthemic track is “Branded” – which is a call for people to be there for one another even if they are rejected by everyone else.

If you see the title of the track “Grunge,” and wonder if that has anything to do with grunge music, then you’d be right. There is nothing atypical about the song lyrics, but everything else about it is reminiscent of classic ’90s grunge. The intro features audio of motorcycle engines revving, then transitions into guitars that are clearly inspired by ’90s rock. It’s an unexpected twist to the band’s usual sound and adds a bit of dimension to the album as a whole. Instead of pumping out twelve rock songs that all sound fairly similar, the group has made a conscious effort to keep things fresh.

Dark Matter is the most mature record the band has released to date. Instead of focusing on breakdowns or screams the songs are more about the lyrical content. This is a direction the band has been heading in for some time, and this album is a culmination of that effort. It’s slightly disappointing that the group has opted to deviate from the sound they created in Deceiver and Life Cycles, but Telle has been in the music industry since he was a teenager so a shift in sound is to be expected. If there are fans who were hoping they’d go back to their older sound, then they will be disappointed. The album is more similar to Real., and they will likely continue on that path for the rest of their career as a band.

Pierce the Veil Announce New Album

Pierce the Veil, one of the fastest-rising, most electrifying artists on the music scene today, will release its hotly-anticipated new album,  Misadventures, on May 13 (Fearless Records).  Misadventures  is the follow up to the band’s 2012 breakthrough release, Collide with the Sky, that debuted at #12 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, held the #1 spot on the Rock, Hard Rock, and Modern Rock/Alternative Albums charts, has sold nearly 350,000 copies, and earned the band a Gold single for the track “King for a Day.”

Check out the band’s video announcement below. Pre-order information for Misadventures will be announced shortly.

The first single from Misadventures will be “Texas is Forever,” a punk-flavored song that goes back to the band’s roots, and, according to the band, is a song that begs to be played live.  It also happens to be the fastest song they’ve ever written.  “Texas is Forever” will be released on March 24.

For Misadventures, the band – Vic Fuentes/vocals, guitar, Tony Perry/guitar, Jaime Preciado/bass, and Mike Fuentes/drums – worked again with Dan Korneff who co-produced Collide and recorded at his Long Island studio Sonic Debris on and off between Summer 2014 and Summer 2015.  “It was exciting to do another record with Dan,” said Vic.  “We had gotten to know him really well on ‘Collide,’ so there wasn’t that initial period where you’re trying to get to know each other.  We just dove in and started to make music right away.”

Initial plans were for Misadventures to be released earlier, but touring commitments and the band’s conscious decision to take their time to make the album the very best it could be, both musically and lyrically, set a different course.  Explained Vic, “We went into this record wanting to top the last one, which we try to do with every record, and we kept setting the bar higher and higher.”

Vic’s search for inspiration took him to a number of places to write the lyrics – New York, San Diego, Los Angeles, the Southern California mountain resort of Big Bear, Santa Barbara and Seattle.  “I wanted every song to have real meaning, and thought that in spending time in different places, I’d find new inspirations – that’s exactly what happened.”

The 11 songs on Misadventures find the band dealing with a variety of topics including self-worth and an individual’s ability to shine, the dream of leaving everything behind while you run away with the one you truly love, the challenge of outrunning betrayal, an undefined relationship, and the horror of the 2015 Paris attacks told from a hypothesized point of view.

Misadventures Track Listing:
1. Dive In
2. Texas is Forever
3. The Divine Zero
4. Floral & Fading
5. Phantom Power and Ludicrous Speed
6. Circles
7. Today I Saw the Whole World
8. Gold Medal Ribbon
9. Bedless
10. Sambuka
11. Song for Isabelle

With Pierce the Veil’s penchant for playing live, expect them to support Misadventures with extensive global touring. The first round of dates will be announced shortly.

Pierce The Veil Stream “Texas Is Forever”

Over the weekend, Pierce The Veil announced the details for their forthcoming studio album. The highly anticipated album, which is titled Misadventures, is set to hit stores May 13 via Fearless Records. The album will feature eleven brand new tracks, including the single they dropped last year, “The Divine Zero.”

Today the band has unleashed another new track off the album. The song is titled “Texas Is Forever,” and it’s available to stream below.

“Texas Is Forever” is quintessential PTV. The song has that unnaturally high energy that the band is known for, and the lyrics are unmistakably theirs. It’s a great single, and if the rest of the album is going to sound like it and “The Divine Zero,” then we have an awesome album in our future.

The Word Alive Unleash Music Video For “Trapped”

Months before the release of Dark Matter, The Word Alive shared the first single, “Trapped.” This song was an introduction to the album, and so it’s only natural that they release a music video for it – and that’s exactly what they did earlier today. The video showcases a darker, slightly less stable side of the band. It’s available to watch below.

Dark Matter is in stores now via Fearless Records. You can pick up a digital copy through iTunes.

The band will hit Europe and the UK this coming May before they embark on Vans Warped Tour. A full list of upcoming tour dates can be found on their website.
